Naming Conventions

#Best practices

Naming conventions are the consistent guidelines that guide how a file is named.

The conventions often describe the content, creation date, and version of a file in its name

Most tools (like SQL) have naming conventions to avoid clashes in function names, keywords and databaase references, but some organisations also have internal naming conventions to help keep things organised. Naming conventions may very well vary from organisation to organisation, and it is fairly common for freelancers and consultants to have theirs as well

Common conventions include:

  • what is capitalised
  • the characters that can (or can’t) be used
  • how to space
  • the format of the characters to indicate the version etc.

What naming conventions are you familiar with?
